Prospective PC specs

PC used mostly for gaming. looking for speed & high graphical fidelity. I will also be using it for work which involves working with large datasets, data visualisation & report writing but primarily I will use this for gaming.

Other than the above, just general browsing.

Is there anything here that stands out as overkill or superfluous?

I'm also looking at getting a Dell G3223Q 32 Inch 4K UHD (3840x2160) Gaming Monitor to take advantage of the 4k, HDR and fast refresh. However I don't know if this a good option? I can stretch to around £900 for a monitor, £1000 at a push. I noticed the image contrast ratio on the monitor was 1000:1, I don't know whether this is any good and if anyone could recommend a suitable monitor for my current spec it would be most appreciated.

The below was putting me back around £3,149.00. My budget is in and around £4k (including a monitor), can go above if necessary but ideally no more than £4,150

I wouldn’t suggest that monitor, it’s totally overpriced, it’s the old fast IPS whereas you could get a cutting edge OLED V2 monitor for around the same price which would totally thrash it.

Is there any reason for so much RAM and core count as the uses you’ve stated wouldn’t suggest any need for them?

Is there any reason you’ve chosen technician setup?

Are you able to recommend a monitor? I'm not really that conversant when it comes to these matters.

As for core count - Again its not my area of expertise but was under the impression that for higher end graphics cards, more cores on the cpu were better for things like speed.

RAM - I wasn't sure really what was necessary with this so thought that I would err on the side of safety and have more than enough.

I've chosen Technician set up purely because the last time I ordered from PC specialist (around 7 years ago now), it came with a load of gear that I had no idea what it's purpose was and felt overwhelmed.

So there’s a welcome box with lots of spare components left over from the build, you just need to keep hold of those for any future upgrades, but they’re not required in the system as it is, they’re spare parts.

The only thing you need to do is connect the power cable, monitor, keyboard and mouse and any peripherals like headsets.

We can definitely optimise the build a bit better for your uses and get you something better balanced. Give me a few minutes and I’ll adjust it a little

This is better balanced on the build. The 7800X3D is the best gaming processor on the planet, the 7950X3D is just a 7800X3D with an additional 7700X, for gaming it's no different to the 7800X3D as only uses that one CCD, the extra cores are only used for things like rendering or multithreaded workloads. It will be more than enough for your other uses

I've amended the drive setup, you want a fast primary drive just for the OS and programs and then the secondary is a dedicated one for games. Personally, I'd have a 7200rpm HDD in there for any actual storage of data as SSD's fail catastrophically whereas HDD's fail sector by sector over many months so you have warning to swap it out if it's starting to fail.

Removed the paste as the cooler comes pre applied with high quality paste, removing that and adding the additional would actually be a downgrade, not an upgrade

Switched the motherboard to the Asus X670E

Upped the power supply to new standard ATX 3 version, and allows for upgrading the GPU to the top tier down the line should you wish to.

Removed Norton, it's nothing more than malware and is completely irrelevant on modern windows as windows includes antivirus.

Removed technician install

Upped warranty to Silver

That puts you inline for a seriously good monitor, this is the latest Gen 3 QD OLED, these corrected the issue with the First Gen panels of last year that had slightly blurry text, so are really good for productivity as well as gaming. They are the best of the best you can get today.

HDR as well if you're not familiar with it, when done well, is a game changing experience for monitors. My monitor does HDR1000 and I could never go back to standard colour definition, it's that good, on OLED though given how they can do true blacks which no other panel technology can do and have per pixel lighting, they're in a league of their own with HDR content. It's a serious game changer.

Thanks very much for your advice and recommended config & monitor. I was a bit in the dark with it all so your help has been invaluable!
That would be an absolute killer system, both for gaming and for your productivity purposes.

Aside from not being 4090, it's pretty much the best money can buy right now, and to be honest, the 4090 while being a great performer, is just terrible value.
